So I watched the first episode of Shadowhunters last week just to give it a go — because let’s be honest, it cannot be worse than the movie.
For those that have Netflix, you’ll already know that they are adding each episode as they are released in the US, which is super awesome! I’m not one to talk about the whole piracy issue, but it’s so great to hear that with the introduction of Netflix, less and less people are looking for different means to watch their favourite shows.
So my initial thoughts on Shadowhunterswas along the lines of ‘yeah it was alright’. I didn’t really have high expectations going in at all, so they were easy to meet.
Character wise, I really like the casting! Everyone was pretty spot on except for Jace (personal opinion, put away your pitch forks people). I’ve only seen Dom Sherwood in Vampire Academy, but I’m just not feeling it with him cast as Jace. And omg, his lines. WHAT EVEN. They felt so forced, and it definitely made me cringe a little.
On the other hand, Simon was cast perfectly! The actor playing him was just adorkable, and encapsulated Simon’s character so well. I was a huge Jace fan in the books, but now I dunno, Simon’s pretty cute.
City of Bones used to be one of my favourite books of all time (way before the hype started and back when it was only meant to be a trilogy), and I’ve read it multiple times over. I know the book pretty well, and it was cool to see a different interpretation of how everything pans out. For example, I pictured Clary’s home differently, the demons were also how I imagined them and what in the world was happening at the Church? Why was there so many people?
Plot-wise it moved pretty quickly. I like that it didn’t drag on and we got to the juicy parts in the first episode. I won’t spoil anything for those that haven’t watched it though.
Overall, I think I would give this episode 2.5 out of 5 stars.
Episode 2 is out on Netflix today…will I watch it? Probably. Not sure if I’ll continue with the whole series, but I’ll give it a few more episodes.
