Hey guys, happy Friday! So just like a lot of you out there, I’m a book hoarder and I tend to purchase books with an intention to read it some day … but never have the time to get around to it. I usually give precedence to books that I request for review obviously because I’ve made a commitment to the publisher to review it. So safe to say that my bookshelves are filled with dozens of unread books. I want to try buddy reading with more people because it gives me the motivation to finally pick up that book I’ve been eyeing off all year! If you’ve been eyeing off a book for a while, let me know and maybe we can buddy read it too (if I own a copy as well, of course).
My first buddy read is with the lovely Pavan @ Keep It Fictional, and as you can see from the title, we’ve been reading Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell! We’ve currently read chapters 1-10, and have provided each other with questions to discuss. Make sure you check out what questions I asked Pavan on her blog as well!
Q1. What do you think of Fangirl so far?
Fangirl started off quite nicely and Rowell did a great job introducing all the characters that make up the book. The characters all sound realistic and I can imagine them as real people that attend college. They all have their own quirks, especially Cath (our main character) and they’re far from perfect but they’re real and I’m excited to see where the book takes them.
Unfortunately, I have not connected with Cath at all. I know a lot of readers have loved her but right now, I find her to be overwhelmingly naive, annoying and even a little bit stupid. Her fear of making new friends and being alone without her twin sister Wren led to this obsession to avoid the cafeteria and only eat snack bars. I’m sorry but that is just stupid. I guess I’m just confounded by the idea of anyone going that far to avoid interaction – to the point of not eating and staying healthy. It’s ironic that Cath nags her dad about the same issue as well. So far, not a fan of Cath at all but I’m hoping she’ll be a little bit less silly as the book progresses.
Q2. Do you have a favourite character yet?
Levi for sure. He is just adorable and quirky and I love the fact that he’s so optimistic about everything. He’s also kind and selfless and such a gentleman to Cath. Oh Levi, we need more of you in real life.
Q3. What do you think of the Simon Snow excerpt/fanfic bits?
Ugh, I really hate it at the moment. It feels unnecessary and detracts from the story making it a very jagged reading experience. I’m still trying to figure out why it’s even relevant to the book seeing as I’d have been satisfied just knowing that Cath wrote Simon Snow fanfic … I really didn’t need to read it as well.
So do you agree/disagree with me? Who is your favourite character in Fangirl? What did you think about the Simon Snow sections?
